Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney’s problems with the conservative base of the party due to his liberal positioning as the governor of the Bay State in the 1990s were a hurdle he spent all of 2011 attempting to overcome, largely without success. He is thanking his stars today that two of his chief Republican rivals for the presidential nomination are embracing Democratic attacks on his tenure at Bain Capital​; in doing so, they are making Romney appear to be the most conservative candidate in the field.
