Are Negative Ads Working For Obama?

(Read the full article here: Are Negative Ads Working For Obama?)

Buried in an otherwise dumb USAT/Gallup poll on Monday is this nugget:

In the battlegrounds, one in 12 say the commercials have changed their minds about President Obama or Republican Mitt Romney — a difference on the margins, but one that could prove crucial in a close race.

At this point, Obama is the clear winner in the ad wars. Among swing-state voters who say the ads have changed their minds about a candidate, rather than justconfirmedwhat they already thought, 76% now support the president, vs. 16% favoring Romney.

This is exactly what the Obama campaign has been working hard to hear. If half of Romney’s entire campaign logic (complimenting the “Obama = economy = bad” half) is “Romney = businessman = good,” the counterstrategy of the Obama campaign has been to simply call that bluff. What kind of businessman was Romney? If he was successful, who benefited from his success, stockholders or workers? Why did so many Bain companies go backrupt, especially while Bain profitied? How has Romney faired in transferring his business acumen to the executive before, given Massachusetts underperformingemployment rate under his tenure? … Read More

Conservative Justices Don’t Want To Be John Roberts’s Friend Anymore

(Read the full article here: Conservative Justices Don’t Want To Be John Roberts’s Friend Anymore)

OMG, you guyz, yer SOOO not going to believe this! So, like, remember two weeks ago, when we thought John Roberts was gonna be all like, “the individual mandate can suck it,” and instead he went, “the individual mandate is totes kosh?” and everybody just FREAKED THE FUCK OUT?

Well, I know the Supreme Court is all like secretive and shit, but this chick Jan like totally knows the people to talk to, and she said that her friend said that Antonin, Clarence, Sam and Tony are SO PISSED at John Roberts right now. Cuz they thought John was their friend, right? Like, when they started hanging out with him in 2005, they were totes BFFs, writing “Federalism” in chalk on the sidewalk and running away from girls cuz they got icky parts. But then John just up and said, “I’m gonna go play lesbian softball with Ruth and Sonya and Elena and that dude 4% of Americans think is Harry Reid, screw you guys.” And he tried to get Tony to go along with him, he was all, “Tony, you should totally come play lesbian softball with us,” and Tony was like, “No way, broseph. Dudes stick together. We were gonna invite you over to watch DVD commentary on 24, but instead you can go play with your sissy friends.”… Read More

Obama Calls For Tax Cut Extension On Middle Class; Romney Does Or Does Not Agree

(Read the full article here: Obama Calls For Tax Cut Extension On Middle Class; Romney Does Or Does Not Agree)

Just days after the third woeful jobs report in a row, Barack Obama will call on Congress Monday to extend the Bush-era tax cuts for one year on individuals making less than $250,000.

Obama extended the Bush tax cuts almost two years ago, striking a lame-duck session deal that exchanged tax cuts for the wealthy for middle-class tax cuts and stimulus measures. The compromise proved a winning one for Obama, who came out of the lame duck session with the wind at his back, but was deeply unpopular with liberals. More damaging, the extension of the tax cuts on the wealthy exacerbated the deficit, for which the Republicans have hammered him ever since. Not surprisingly, Obama has been adamant that the compromise will not happen again, and today’s announcement is a confirmation of that determination….Read More

Racist Birther Luke Scott Close To All-Time MLB Hitless Record

(Read the full story here: Racist Birther Luke Scott Close To All-Time MLB Hitless Record)

Luke Scott—the gun-toting, plantain-chip-throwing, mutton-chop shaving, smug, racist, birther designated hitter of the Tampa Bay Rays—is about to set a record. With no hits in his last 39 at-bats, Scott is only eight outs away from being setting the new standard formost at-bats by a non-pitcher without a hit. In fact, it’s gotten so bad that Just-Rays manager Joe Maddon has begun pinch-hitting for Luke Scott with pitchers, which sounds like a good way to get shot by Luke Scott. …Read More

David Brooks Ruins Henry IV To Make Stupid Point About The Education System

(Read the full article here: David Brooks Ruins Henry IV To Make Stupid Point About The Education System)

Good Friday afternoon to you, plebes, and I hope you’re all set for your well-earned weekend. First, though, we must trot over to the New York Times, where it’s always Paywall Day, and have a look-see at what David Brooks has done to one of your PoliticOlogist’s top three Shakespeare plays.

Brooks, last seen chiding us all for not being Good Followers as our Leaders led us off a moral and financial cliff, and then penning a few hundred inscrutable words aboutsomething named Bruce Springsteen (or, as Brooks prefers him, The Boss) has scribed another one of his inspired columns—you know the type, the type comprised entirely of invalid generalities and illegitimate assumptions and blissfully free of the kind of evidence that would confirm that even an iota of what he’s talking about occurs outside of his own noggin….Read More

Did Charlie Rangel Steal The Election For NY-15?

Did Charlie Rangel Steal The Election For NY-15?

Remember when Charlie Rangel, the incumbent representative from NY-15, defeated Sen. Adriano Espaillat in June’s primary election? Not so fast: a new report from the New York Daily News suggests Rangel might be involved in a party conspiracy to ensure his victory by wrongly disqualifying hundreds of paper ballots.

On Thursday, Election Board officials started a tally of the nearly 2600 ballots that had been submitted by people who tried to vote, but were told their name was not on the rolls. After the initial re-count, Rangel’s lead increased by another 131 votes. But consider two factoids: Rangel won the June primary by only 807 votes; and, Washington Heights and Inwood, Espaillat’s stronghold, has yet to be recounted, meaning that Rangel’s narrow lead could become significantly more narrow.…Read More

Republican Governor Vetoes Voter ID Bill Because He Apparently Doesn’t Understand Why Republicans Like Voter ID Bills

(Read the full article here: Republican Governor Vetoes Voter ID Bill Because He Apparently Doesn’t Understand Why Republicans Like Voter ID Bills)

Republicans hit a snag in their efforts to make sure nobody darker than receipt ever votes again, when Michigan Governor Rick Snyder vetoed—that’s vetoed, not signed—a Voter ID bill on Tuesday, becoming the first Republican governor in the past two years to veto such a bill.

Snyder said that while he “appreciates the issue of ensuring voters are eligible and U.S. citizens,” he felt the measure could create “voter confusion among absentee voters.”…Read More

Today in Conservative Crazy, Poor People Are Like Wild Animals Edition

(Read the Full article here: Today in Conservative Crazy, Poor People Are Like Wild Animals Edition)

This has been getting posted on the walls of Conservative Alley, Internet Town, recently:

 Today in Conservative Crazy

(I was confused at first, too, but apparently that’s what was once known as a newspaper; and it does not appear to be a fake, as fake stuff is free, whereas this gem is behind a paywall).

Text version:

The Food Stamp Program, administered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, is proud to be distributing the greatest amount of free meals and food stamps ever.

Meanwhile, the National Park Service, administered by the U.S. Department of the Interior, asks us to ‘Please Do Not Feed the Animals.’

Their stated reason for the policy is because the animals will grow dependent on handouts and will not learn to take care of themselves.

This ends today’s lesson.

So. Let’s leave aside the fact that if Billy Fleming ever dipped below the poverty line, he’d have his hand out faster than you could say “social safety net.” Or that Billy Fleming has benefited every moment of his life, from birth until right this very instant, from a giant complex of state and federally-funded networks like hospitals and roads and schools and regulatory agencies that keep his toys free of lead and his food free of contamination…Read More

Who Will Win North Carolina

Who Will Win North Carolina

Yesterday, The Fix moved North Carolina from toss-up to lean Romney, echoing aprediction PoliticOlogy made about two months ago: that the Tarheel State would make its 2008 Democratic shift a one-time swing, and revert back to its Republican ways.

Obama was the first Democrat to win North Carolina since History’s Greatest Monster. But despite a thirteen-point swing to the Democrats in 2008, North Carolina barely awarded Obama its 15 electoral votes: he grabbed just 14,000 more votes than John McCain. Still, the state had moved enough to the left to get the DNC’s attention. The Democratic Convention will be held in Charlotte this year, and the DNC is spending big on ads, possibly enticed by the state’s 111% growth in Hispanic population in the past decade.…Read More

Mitt Romney Has An Argument With Himself Over Jobs

(Read the full article here: Mitt Romney Has An Argument With Himself Over Jobs)

Here’s a little video side-by-side for you, where Romney explains that it takes a while for the economy to gain more jobs. Watch as Romney uses the same issue to simultaneously defend his jobs record as Governor and defame Obama. It’s pretty wonderful:
