How Iran Is Ducking Sanctions To Become A Nuclear Player

(Read the full article here: How Iran Is Ducking Sanctions To Become A Nuclear Player)

Even with the US and Israel leading coordinated cyberattacks and targeted killings, Iran is on its way to bypass international sanctions, resume its exports of crude oil andcontinueresearch and development of nuclear technology. In fact, according to M16 chief Sir John Sawers, Iranians are about two years away from their goal of having nuclear weapons, and Sawers is waring that Israel and the US may have to consider launching a military attack.

Iran has been preparing for that eventuality, stepping up its missile program and showcasing its new military tech at its most recent war games. Iran’s Revolutionary Guard led the games in the country’s central desert, launching a number of new and effective missiles. Showcased at the games were ground-to-ground missiles, ballistic missiles and a new launching system capable of firing multiple missiles within seconds. Iranian media sources reported that these new and improved technologies would make it difficult for the US and Israel to shoot down incoming missiles in the event of a war…Read More

David Brooks And The Problem Of The Elites

(Read the full article here: David Brooks And The Problem Of The Elites)

Congratulations to Giant Marxist Vagina Chris Hayes. Nevermind a steady gig at theNation or a weekend show on MSNBCyou know you’ve made it when David Brooksdevotes a whole column to debunking you. From now on, Mr. Hayes drinks for free south of 14th St., in which I include most of the rest of the country where most of the rest of the plebes live.

Brooks no doubt could see this portion of the superstructure from his house, if he didn’t have such a bad habit of mistaking mirrors for windows:

Through most of the 19th and 20th centuries, the Protestant Establishment sat atop the American power structure. A relatively small network of white Protestant men dominated the universities, the world of finance, the local country clubs and even high government service.

And things were great. Go on.

Over the past half–century, a more diverse and meritocratic elite has replaced the Protestant Establishment. People are more likely to rise on the basis of grades, test scores, effort and performance.

Or family pedigree, family prominence, family connections, or a combination of all three. Go on…Read more.

Did Obama Just End Welfare Reform?

(Read the full article here: Did Obama Just End Welfare Reform?)

The right wing blogotwittersphere is agog at a Health and Human Services directivereleased late Thursday that grants states greater leeway in apportioning welfare with regard to an individual’s ability to work. Specifically, they’re up in arms over the directive’s elimination of the reporting requirements for welfare’s work requirement—the part of the 1996 welfare reform package mandating welfare recipients engage in the labor force as a condition of aid. (It also allows states to grant assistance in exchange for education and training and the rest, but conservatives thinks those are all code words for “watch daytime tv.”)

What’s the big deal about a reporting requirement? Conservatives see it as an end route to eliminating the work requirement itself (if you don’t have to report it, you don’t have to do it), allowing bums to use the lie around on the government’s dime without so much as glancing at the want ads. Russia Is Flexing Its Military Might In A Big Way – But For Whom?

(Read the full article here: Russia Is Flexing Its Military Might In A Big Way – But For Whom?)

There was another show of might today, when two Russian Navy ships entered the eastern Mediterranean as an advance unit of an 11-warship flotilla. This, according to James Brooke of VOA, is to be “the largest display of Russian naval power in the Mediterranean since the collapse of the Soviet Union.”

“Russia has a crystal clear position,” said Yevgeny Michenko, the director of the International Institute for Policies Expertise in Moscow. “It means that Russia does not want to support changes of the Syrian president, and Russia doesn’t support any kind of military operation like it was in Libya.”…Read More.

(Read the full article here: The 20 Best, Worst, Most Offensive and Most Ridiculous Tweets About Romney And the NAACP)

Romney was booed about an hour ago at the NAACP convention (unless you‘re a conservative, in which case it sounded like a standing ovation) in the most predictable outcome to anything ever. But Twitter is a void that must be filled, and fill it we all did. Here are the ten best, worst, most ridiculous, unbelievable or flat-out strangest responses to Romney’s vowing to repeal Obamacare to a room full of Democratic voters:

NAACP Boos Mitt Romney Cuz Why Wouldn’t They (VIDEO)

(Read the full article here: NAACP Boos Mitt Romney Cuz Why Wouldn’t They (VIDEO))

“I believe,” Romney started strongly, “that if you understood who I truly am in my heart, and if it were possible to fully communicate what I believe is in the real, enduring best interest of African-American families, you would vote for me for president.”

He put his hands on the pew on smiled. Nobody applauded, but nobody booed. Until Romney vowed to repeal Obama’s health care reforms, the crowd at Wednesday’s NAACP conference maintained a comfortable silence interspersed by light clapping. Then they booed, leaving Romney to grin awkwardly while he waited for the crowd’s vocal disapproval to end….Read more

Karl Rove’s Super PACs Plan $70 Billion Ad Blitz To Retake Senate

(Read the full article here: Karl Rove’s Super PACs Plan $70 Billion Ad Blitz To Retake Senate)

Karl Rove’s twin Super PACs Crossroads GPS and American Crossroads have announced a$70 million advertising blitz that’s expected to begin next week.

A significant portion of the mula is expected to go toward Republican Senate campaigns. Mitch McConnell recently said that the Senate chamber could go either way; there’s about a 50-50 chance that Republicans will gain control. Steven Law, the President and CEO of American Crossroads, said his organization was trying its best to “tip the scale for the GOP.”…Read More

Rick Perry Rejects Medicaid Expansion, Because It Kinda Feels Like Secession

(Read the full article here: Rick Perry Rejects Medicaid Expansion, Because It Kinda Feels Like Secession)

Rick Perry, last seen comparing Social Security to a Ponzi scheme, singing the UT fight song “I’ve Been Working On The Railroad” in a New Hampshire bathroom, and doing this, became on Monday the fourth governor to refuse the Medicaid expansion provision of the Affordable Care Act.

Perry joins fellow gulf shrimp Rick Scott of Florida, along with Scott Walker of Wisconsin and Nikki Haley of South Carolina, in rejecting the Medicaid expansion provision, which ups the threshold for Medicaid from 37% of the poverty line to 133%. If implemented, the expansion would insure 49.4% of uninsured Texas by 2019.

Global Warming Roundup: Protesting Scientists, the Air-Conditioning Lobby, And More

(Read the full article here: Global Warming Roundup: Protesting Scientists, the Air-Conditioning Lobby, And More)

As we’ve seen from polling, the more extreme the temperatures, the more credulous people are of global warming. So the upside of all this heat is we might finally get more meaningful legislation to regulate environmental impact.

Protesting Scientists: Or not! Scientiests in Canada are donning lab coats and marching in the streets against the Canadian government’s enervating of environmental laws. Canada’s conservative prime minister Stephen Harper, who looks like a guy buying a TV at Best Buy, doesn’t understand all the fuss about this so-called environment…Read More

Romney Campaign Outraises Obama By $35 Million

(Read the full article here: Romney Campaign Outraises Obama By $35 Million)

Team Romney outraised Team Obama $106 million to $71 million in June, making for the highest fundraising numbers yet of the 2012 campaign.

Obama’s campaign upped its haul by $11 million from last month, but that’s nothing compared to the 50% jump made by Romney’s campaign, which leapt from $77 million. It’s the second straight month that Romney has outraised Obama, and he has just about closed the gap between the two treasuries (Obama, who didn’t have a contested primary, got a head start on his Republican challenger).

The numbers reflect the combined totals of the individual campaigns and the party committees. Romney and the RNC also have a joint fundraising committee, Romney Victory, which, yes, sounds like an evil spaceship….Read More
