Even with the US and Israel leading coordinated cyberattacks and targeted killings, Iran is on its way to bypass international sanctions, resume its exports of crude oil andcontinueresearch and development of nuclear technology. In fact, according to M16 chief Sir John Sawers, Iranians are about two years away from their goal of having nuclear weapons, and Sawers is waring that Israel and the US may have to consider launching a military attack. 

Iran has been preparing for that eventuality, stepping up its missile program and showcasing its new military tech at its most recent war games. Specifically, they’re up in arms over the directive’s elimination of the reporting requirements for welfare’s work requirement—the part of the 1996 welfare reform package mandating welfare recipients engage in the labor force as a condition of aid. (It also allows states to grant assistance in exchange for education and training and the rest, but conservatives thinks those are all code words for “watch daytime tv.”)

What’s the big deal about a reporting requirement? Conservatives see it as an end route to eliminating the work requirement itself (if you don’t have to report it, you don’t have to do it), allowing bums to use the lie around on the government’s dime without so much as glancing at the want ads. There was another show of might today, when two Russian Navy ships entered the eastern Mediterranean as an advance unit of an 11-warship flotilla. This, according to James Brooke of VOA, is to be “the largest display of Russian naval power in the Mediterranean since the collapse of the Soviet Union.”

“Russia has a crystal clear position,” said Yevgeny Michenko, the director of the International Institute for Policies Expertise in Moscow. “It means that Russia does not want to support changes of the Syrian president, and Russia doesn’t support any kind of military operation like it was in Libya.”…Read More.

Team Romney outraised Team Obama $106 million to $71 million in June, making for the highest fundraising numbers yet of the 2012 campaign.

Obama’s campaign upped its haul by $11 million from last month, but that’s nothing compared to the 50% jump made by Romney’s campaign, which leapt from $77 million. It’s the second straight month that Romney has outraised Obama, and he has just about closed the gap between the two treasuries (Obama, who didn’t have a contested primary, got a head start on his Republican challenger).
